<Back to Vineyards and Olives menu Greatness in any endeavor is elusive. Most people do not know what they are looking for much less how to find it. At times our society seems bent on attacking achievement of any kind. Then you have your competition, government intervention and that most difficult foe labeled prosperity. Our Paso Robles wine community is special. We have weathered much adversity. Our time is now. People often ask me what makes the Paso Robles wine community special. Is it the soil, the climate, the water? Is it our coastal influence? These factors are important because one needs the fundamental forces of nature to partner in quality production. However, the last time I looked, there were wineries in 45 of our 50 states and vineyards in almost every state. They were growing grapes in Long Beach and Cincinnati long before Paso Robles. So what is the answer? Individual people, working together as a group, can achieve success far beyond anything one person can create. The community spirit, long a hallmark of Paso Robles, has been the driving force of our success in the wine industry. Sure we have the natural resources but it is the willingness of our wine community to work together as a group that has put us in a position to step up and kick ass in the wine world. Individuals in business are beatable. Teams are much harder to beat. One can trace any great leap forward to a coming together of talented minds working together towards a common goal. Look at the history of jazz. Blacks and whites playing together in late nightclubs learning from one another. A willingness to share. A search for something special. Talented musicians congregating in New Orleans, Chicago and New York wanting to be part of something special. Artistic achievement. You see the same thing here. People sharing information. Working together. Excited to see other people succeed. That is what it is all about. This collaborative spirit gives us a competitive edge in growing a world-class wine region. It is the willingness to work together, towards the common goal of promoting the quality of our Appellation, which will carry us to new heights. When you have talented people in a resource rich environment the sky is the limit. By Pete Dakin |
